Product demo video

How to make a product demo video for an app or SaaS, on a Mac

A product demo video shows the product doing one job, well enough that the viewer can picture doing it themselves. Here is how to plan one, write it, record clean screens on a Mac, edit it with zooms, captions and a voice, and cut short versions for social feeds.

What a product demo video is for

A product demo video answers the question every visitor has: "what would it look like if I used this?" It is not a feature tour. The best demos pick one task the viewer cares about, show it from start to finish in the real interface, and stop. A demo on your landing page, a short demo in an ad and an App Store preview can all come from the same recordings, but each is cut for its own place.

Plan the demo video: one job, one viewer

Write the demo script before you record

Write one line per step, in the words your user would use. Open with the problem in one sentence, then the steps, then the result, then where to get the product. Read it aloud: if a line does not match something on screen, cut it. The script also gives you your captions and, with text-to-speech, your voiceover.

Record the demo: clean screen recordings on a Mac

Edit the product video: zooms, callouts, captions and voice

  1. Cut every wait. Loading spinners and typing can be sped up or removed. ClipForge speeds clips from 0.25x to 4x with the pitch of any sound kept natural.
  2. Zoom into what matters. A full screen is unreadable on a phone. Animate a zoom to the button or result with keyframes and easing.
  3. Add one caption per step. Short, large and inside the safe zone. See auto captions on Mac.
  4. Add a voiceover. Record your own, or generate one from the script with text-to-speech on Mac, which is easier to update when the interface changes.
  5. End on the result and the call to action: where to download or sign up.

Short demo videos for social, long demos for your site

From one long demo you can cut several short ones. For TikTok, Reels and Shorts, open on the result or the problem rather than the login screen, keep one step, caption it, and end on the call to action. Frame the screens in a phone on a brand-coloured background so they read as a product shot in a vertical feed. That short cut is a demo-led ad; see how to make app ads for the full structure.

If the demo is for an iPhone app's App Store page, Apple only allows screen captures of the app itself, at specific sizes and up to thirty seconds: see App Store preview video specs.

Making a product demo video in ClipForge

  1. Import your screen recordings and set your brand colour.
  2. Trim and speed up the waits; add zooms with keyframes where the eye should go.
  3. Generate a text-to-speech voiceover from your script and captions timed to it.
  4. Add music under the voice.
  5. Export a long 16:9 version for your site and vertical versions for each social platform from the same project.

All of this is in ClipForge's free editor for Mac. Premium adds the UGC hook library, the full music and sound-effects libraries and the Claude / MCP connection, which can draft a short demo-led ad from your screenshots or recording. See the video ad maker page and the features.

Questions

How long should a product demo video be?

As long as the one task it shows, and no longer. A demo on a landing page often runs a minute or two; a cut for TikTok, Reels or Shorts usually keeps only the most striking moment and fits in well under thirty seconds.

What is the difference between a demo video and an explainer video?

A demo video shows the real product being used: real screens, real clicks. An explainer video explains an idea or a problem, often with animation, and may never show the interface. Demos convince people who already know what they need; explainers help people who are still working out the problem.

Should a product demo video have a voiceover?

It helps, especially for longer demos on a website where people watch with sound. For social feeds, add captions for every line because most people watch muted. A text-to-speech voiceover is easy to update when the product changes.

How do I record my iPhone app for a demo video?

Run it in the iOS Simulator and record with xcrun simctl io booted recordVideo demo.mov, or connect the iPhone to a Mac and record it in QuickTime Player (File, New Movie Recording, then choose the iPhone as the camera). The iPhone's own screen recording in Control Center works too.
